Joni is a vocal coach, performing vocalist and keyboardist, blending original soul, classical voice, and improvisation. She has a Bachelor's degree in music and seven years of performing experience. She also studies conscious control and physical misuse patterns currently in a teacher-training program at the Oregon Center of the Alexander Technique.
She has been performing since a little girl, but professionally for seven years. She studied four years of music and voice along with two years of piano instruction while earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Singing away, she also emphasized experimental improvisation, composition, and vocal pedagogy.
Her early urge to perform and write music led her first solo release, Dividing Silence in 2012 on piano and voice and later another EP Harvest in 2015 on baritone ukulele and voice. She has been featured in many collaborative projects, one being In The Waking Hour (2016) including a trio of voice, gongs, and upright bass. Most of Joni’s work has been with her band that released The City Pines in 2015 and she is currently performing and writing music in Portland, Oregon for their next album. Many inspirations have been drawn from her art residencies at the Wormfarm Institute in August 2015 and 2016.
Joni has a strong, eclectic sound mixing original soul singing with classical and experimental training. She holds mature technical control and carries philosophies of awareness to create a balance between the mechanical and spiritual voice.
She has taught voice lessons at Brass Bell Music Store in Glendale, WI, 4/4 School of Music in Clackamas, OR, and privately out of home for 2 months. Her students have ranged from ages 5-50 and they focus on building technique and practice, finding vocal registers, memorization, improvisation, and authentic expression.
