Violinist and composer Cortland Mahoney breaths the unanticipated. You are equally likely to see him performing classical music in a church service as you are his original material with a jazz or rock group- on both violin and guitar. The common thread that runs through all styles is his holistic understanding of what music is and its function in our world.

As a private educator, his studio focuses on the idea of artistic expression within a command of technique and theory. A typical lesson will include select etudes, a solo piece (of student's choice by my recommendations), and discussions on music theory.

As a Teaching Artist with the Noel Pointer Foundation, Cortland provides musical education to the youth of Brooklyn. He also offers workshops to string students on the topics of jazz and improvisation.

Current projects include the solo acoustic-electronic Wallpaper, as well as Ryan Gilmour’s acoustic Ditch Effort. Past projects as a a leader, Cortland established and directed the Agave Democracy in progressive jazz rock fusion, pushed boundaries of modern performance with Anachronos, and told stories with the Music of the Munes. As a sideman, he has played with numerous jazz groups, chamber ensembles, and symphonic orchestras.

Cortland is the recipient of the Beth Landis Award for Violin Performance, the Koch Cultural Trust Enabling Grant, the Bettylou Hubin Scholarship for Music Technology, and the winner of the Anderson Concerto Competition. Outside of musical activity, In his time outside of music, Cortland studies physics and practices mathematics.
